After A Rs 70 Crore Flop, Drona 2 : Are You Ready With Rotten Tomatoes?

DRONA is undoubtedly one of the biggest flops Indian Cinema has ever seen. Not taking currency inflation in to account, it is the BIGGEST FLOP of all time. It would compete with RAZIA SULTAN which was earlier touted to be an all time biggest flop of Indian Cinema that released 25 years ago. Drona was made on a reported Rs. 50 Crore budget and approximately another Rs. 20 Crore went into the Prints & Promotion. So, it touches the Rs. 70 Crore figure to become one of the costliest movies ever made on Indian screen. And the latest figures at the Box Office are a gross collection of Rs. 11+ Crore from all over India. The occupancy rates have been hovering around 25-30% all over India.

DRONA

DRONA as a flop is much bigger than recent mega flops like LOVE STORY 2050 (Gross: Rs. 25+ Crore) and TASHAN (Gross: Rs. 20+ Crore). And some fools have been claiming it as the answer to LORD OF THE RINGS series. :-P This disaster has much more significance as it was released bang in the middle of festival season. In stark contrast, movies with no-frills that released earlier like A WEDNESDAY! and WELCOME TO SAJJANPUR have been going rock steady even this week. We think that the main culprits for the failure of Drona are ABHISHEK BACHCHAN & GOLDIE BEHL. Let us know, if you think contrary.

And now, the grandest fool of all time, GOLDIE BEHL is still adamant at directing a SEQUEL to DRONA. He says that if the battered Producer ROSE MOVIES and distributor EROS INTERNATIONAL are with him… he would make DRONA 2 even bigger (probably an even bigger disaster). So, are you guys n gals ready with rotten tomatoes or not? ;-)

I think that you are being extremely harsh on a fim that has tried honestly to set new benchmarks in Indian Cinema.

    Hi David Bush,

Thanks for taking time to comment. Actually Drona doesn’t set any benchmarks as far as the Superhero genre is concerned and rather it minimizes the box office openings for the next immediate superhero genre movie made in India(if I dig my humble knowledge of the Indian Cinema). It doesn’t set any benchmarks as far as CG work is concerned… some pieces when looked in isolation might be serve as benchmarks (like the climax episode) but as a whole the work is flimsy (the supposedly grand stunts on train moving at snail’s pace and please do compare this to the Mission Impossible’s stunts on TGV). As far as the story is concerned, this must be the oldest story known to the silver screen. And to top them all… ABHISHEK BACHCHAN is probably one of the most careless, irresponsible, lazy actor in Indian Cinema. He has just 4 hits so far. 2 of them are courtesy John and Hrithik. Another has stalwarts like Ratnam, Rahman and Aish herself…

I really can’t understand what benchmarks you are talking about. :-[

But don’t you think Abhishek was good in Guru and Yuva?

  • KALCHA wrote on 12 October, 2008, 6:37

    Hi Chaitanya,

I do think that Abhishek was great in both Yuva and Guru. But that again makes my argument stronger that he is a LAZY and IRRESPONSIBLE actor (but potentially good actor). Otherwise he would have given his 100% to each and every film that he did and not just in Mani Ratnam’s movies. Out of his 35+ movies… he just has those 2 performances to show for his talent. That is way too low… a number by any standards. Crores of Bollywood’s money has gone down the gutters just to make him stand as a star.

Let me give you another example of his demand in the industry. He is still paid way below SAIF ALI KHAN. That proves that he can only dream about reaching the A list stars like Shahrukh, Aamir, Hrithik and Akshay. :-)

    HI ARBAZ,

I am really sorry that I haven’t been able to give my review on CHINTAKAYALA RAVI. It is just that I am really pressed for time… as a few of my sites are under construction.

As for the box report… CHINTAKAYALA RAVI is doing fairly well. My sources have been reporting very positive report from all over the state. The opening weekend had been above 90% which is a tremendous number and the weekdays have been steady owing to the festival seaon. But it had gone down over the next weekend. But it has already made enough that it can be declared a HIT. There is virtually no competition to Chintakayala Ravi as KBL is more of an urban movie as it is not a wide release (almost not released in C centers).

As for the public Talk is concerned… it is not entirely positive. Although many are disliking the movie… it is the first choice for any family to have a cinema outing.

I hope I answered you. Please ask any questions you have. I may get late… but will surely answer. And a lot many thanks for commenting on our site. :-)
