Hmmm… INITIAL THOUGHTS
HEROES would be another BORDER. I truly hated BORDER. It was one of the most Bollywoody war movie that I have seen. There was no war trauma in the truest sense. Mostly… there were a bunch of home-sick stories with a lots of chittis (letters). I just expected the same with HEROES as it too deals with chittis.
PLOT OF THE MOVIE
A couple of wayward students venture upon a grand cross country journey to deliver 3 letters to the bereaved families of war heroes. This journey is to shoot a film “Why Not To Join Defence Services” that can get them their graduation and Visa to USA. But how the journey and the Trauma with Pride of the bereaved families change their own goals in lives is the film about.

- The positive aspects of the film lies in a space of about 5-10 minutes that PREITY ZINTA occupies the screen and surprises us with her restrained, natural and undramatic portrayal of Kuljith (wife of Balkar Singh portrayed by Salman Khan). She is really a good actress… but most of the directors and the audiences don’t look beyond her cute dimples. Being at the typically fag end of her Bollywoody career… all I can say is that her talent has been grossly under used.
- I really liked the overall theme and the intentions of the makers of this film. For example, there is not even a single line of Pakistan bashing that was typical of the so-called patriotic Indian movies. And the overall emphasis has been laid on the Pride and the responsibilities of a citizen. There is not even a “Join The Defence Services or else… you are unpatriotic” kind of stupid messages in the film. All it dealt is, with the importance of a soldier’s life for this nation.
- I really love a scene where the protagonists SOHAIL KHAN (Saand) and VATSAL SHETH (Nawab) playfully stumble upon the Border fencing passing through a long stretch of identical fields on either sides of Pakistan and India. It was a brilliant idea… only executed in an ordinary manner. It could have been the best scene of the year… if shot with a keen eye through the lenses and better actors.

- Lets start by stating that 2 pairs of brothers completely ruined this movie almost entirely on their own. Oh yeah… you guessed it right. KHANs & DEOLs have brought the house down with their typical dramatic overtures and mannerisms. While SALMAN KHAN with his robotic movements and more-than-needed mellowness in voice… looks like the eternal drunkard of the Defence Services, his brother SOHAIL KHAN is cast as a student (absolutely a great insult to his fellow students) who does his best to OVER ACT. While SUNNY DEOL couldn’t resist a superhuman, extravagant and stupid Bollywoody fight sequence even from a wheel chair, his brother BOBBY DEOL amply does his best to give us the reason why the hell he never made it in Bollywood.
- The MUSIC of the movie is quite oldy stuff with no tunes that resonate in ears after the speakers pronounce them dead in the theaters… let alone striking a chord with our hearts.
- What is very disappointing from the CINEMATOGRAPHY point of view is the wasted opportunity to show case the beautiful settings of the Defence services or the filming of the vast expanses that make up the barren mountains in the valley. All that PIYUSH PANCHAL does is to give a colour tone to the expanse and completely overlook the novelty part. There are N number of techniques out there which could have lent the movie a modern feel. If you don’t get what I mean… just rewind back to RANG DE BASANTI… which was a path breaking movie in the history of Indian Cinema. Cinematography played a major part in the success of the movie although it never went to the Kashmir valley.
- I really can’t understand, how does these untalented technicians find job in the film industry. I mean what the hell was the EDITOR SANJAY SANKLA doing on his table. If he has no pattern that he can dazzle us with… at the least he could do was to trim the movie by another 30 minutes to make it watchable. Really inexcusably horrible work.
- The STORY of the movie, in essence, is a combination of 2 movies. One is LAKSHYA starring HRITHIK ROSHAN and directed by FARHAN AKHTAR and the other one is DIARIOS DE MOTOCICLETA (THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES). But I wouldn’t have minded this inspiration, if the superb theme had been exquisitely pictured on screen. The movie starts off with 2 copied jokes.. The Leather-Pants joke on Vatsal is a direct lift from the popular sitcom FRIENDS (joke is on ROSS GELLAR). The other one on Sohail Khan where he comes home to his girl friend along with her father… is a direct lift from a South Indian movie… but as of now I don’t remember the details of the movie. There is no proper SCREENPLAY at all. All the pattern I found was… Deliver this - Sing That - Deliver That - Fight This - Deliver What - Play Whom. I know you wouldn’t get what I mean in the above sentence unless you watch this movie… but that’s all I can reveal as of now. With so many awry things going around, can you imagine what is the DIRECTOR SAMEER KARNIK of the movie doing? Oh yeah… he must be a Pub-Buddy of Salman Khan to have directed this movie with sooo muuuch attention to detail. Uhhh… he gives Salman Khan a second outing in the film to torture us even in the final few seconds of the movie.
NOT SO… FINAL THOUGHTS
HEROES is not at all worth your valuable time. But if someone really gives you a choice between HEROES, KIDNAP, DRONA, HELLO & ROADSIDE ROMEO… please choose HEROES.
