BEFORE STEPPING IN TO THE THEATRE

I really thought that this might be the ZARA HATKE comedy as the premise of Mughal-E-Azam attracted me. Why shouldn’t I expect fireworks when there was PARESH RAWAL, KAY KAY MENON & RAHUL BOSE (I liked his subtle acting skills in Chameli). So, let’s see how it fared in this season of Bollywood DUDS

Don’t Have Time To Read On? The Picture Below Is Enough…

"MAAN GAYE MUGHAL-E-AZAM" COOPIED FROM "TO BE OR NOT TO BE"

Really guys n gals, that’s about it. Maan Gaye Mughall-E-Azam is a scene-scene Copy-Paste job. The source of the movie is a ERNST LUBITSCH’s 1942 CLASSIC “TO BE OR NOT TO BE”. From the Struggling Ham Stage Troupe to the RAW agent to the Villains getting Busted by these set of ham stage actors… every thing is carefully copied. My Hat’s-off to SANJAY CHHEL for going beyond his Bollywood Bad-Asses to Copy-Paste a classic that is much older than his own age. We are quite used to copies of some contemporary hits but this is a rare fete. So, you might ask, when this is a straight Copy-Paste job, it must be really great then…! But here-in lies the fallout of most of the copies in Indian Cinema.

Let me give you an analogy… When someone saves an image for the web, then he/she would reduce the quality of the image to make it portable and web-friendlier i.e., speedier. In a similar way, these Bollywood Bad-Asses copy the scripts from within and elsewhere and try to Indianise them. That is plagiarism alright. But in doing so, most of the times they end up messing the original script and in this particular case… make it Louder, Nonsensical, Crude, Sleazier and Stupid.

IS IT REALLY THAT BAD?

NO. It does evoke some genuinely laughable moments. The best part of Maan Gaye Mughall-E-Azam are the fantastic One-Liners. But they come in episodic fashion leaving you with the quintessential Over-The-Top humour. The only performance that is worth watching is that of KAY KAY MENON… and there are no surprises there. He is undoubtedly one of the best actors of all time in Indian Cinema. Paresh Rawal is okay. The most disgusting performance is by Rahul Bose. I mean for a Chameli or Pyar Ke Side Effects, the lack of proper Hindi was okay. But even in this movie titled as historic as it can be… he doesn’t speak freely when the character demands fluidity and comic timing. He is as usual stuck with his Hinglish. If Rahul dressed as Saleem or some badass gangster is enough to make you laugh, then good luck. MALLIKA SHERAWAT although is primarily for skin-fest, performs surprisingly with genuine comic timing. I am really impressed with her dialogue delivery especially in the scenes with Haldi Hassan (Kay Kay Menon).

TECHNICALLY SPEAKING…

What…? I didn’t get you… Really that would be the answer of Sanjay Chhel. As this is a featureless movie, he would have had a bountiful of budget to bring some good Art Work as it deals with stage dramas. Proper Lighting, Camera Work would have polished those garish stage scenes. And Music by ANU MALIK is cabb… sorry… GARBAGE.

In the end, if you have nothing else to do, then it is much more entertaining than Singh-Is-kinng and God Tussi Great Ho put together. Enjoy or persih… depends on your guts and sensibilities.
